"Former Buffalo Bills quarterback Trent Edwards is taking his talents to north Florida.
And in 11 days, he'll be bringing them right back to Buffalo.
Edwards, who was released by the Bills on Monday, was claimed off waivers Tuesday afternoon by the Jacksonville Jaguars.
Coincidentally, the Jaguars visit Ralph Wilson Stadium to play the Bills in Week Five.
To fill Edwards' spot on its roster, Buffalo re-signed rookie quarterback Levi Brown on Tuesday. Brown, a seventh-round draft pick out of Troy in April, was among the Bills' final cuts earlier this month. The 6-foot-4, 225-pounder went 15 of 30 for 130 yards and two interceptions in the preseason. He had a quarterback rating of 34.0.
Brown was not offered a spot on the Bills' practice squad after being cut. He had tryouts with at least three teams since then, including the Patriots, Steelers and Giants, but had not been able to land a job.
Bills coach Chan Gailey addressed the possibility of bringing Brown back Monday when discussing the release of Edwards.
"I think he is a guy we would look at very closely," Gailey said. "We liked him when he was here."
Brown will serve as the Bills' No. 3 quarterback behind starter Ryan Fitzpatrick and backup Brian Brohm.
Edwards, meanwhile, reportedly had two teams submit claims for him, the Jaguars and New York Jets. In going to Jacksonville, he lands in what's likely to be his best option for playing time this season.
The Jaguars are 1-2, with quarterback David Garrard struggling mightily in back-to-back losses. Garrard threw four interceptions and was benched in a blowout loss at San Diego in Week Two, then completed just 13 of 30 passes for 105 yards in a 25-point loss to Philadelphia on Sunday. He was sacked six times against the Eagles.
Jaguars coach Jack Del Rio was tepid in his support of Garrard on Monday when meeting with Jacksonville-area media members.
"As long as he's our best option, he'll continue to play," the coach said.
Another factor favoring Edwards is Jacksonville's lack of depth behind Garrard. Backup quarterback Luke McCown tore his ACL against the Chargers and is out for the season. Garrard's backup Sunday was 38-year-old Todd Bouman, whom Jacksonville signed Sept. 21."
