"The Reds open the spring season at 1 p.m. Sunday. But it will be without Opening Day starter Edinson Volquez on the mound.

Volquez was scheduled to start, but can't because of visa issues. In short, he's not allowed to play in front of paying fans without a work visa.

The Reds went through the same thing with Timo Perez a few years ago. Volquez came to the U.S. on a travel visa. He'll likely have to return to the Dominican Republic to get a work visa.

The Reds don't know when the problem will be resolved.

"No clue," manager Dusty Baker said. "We tried to get it resolved before he got here."

Volquez's visa was hung up because of his suspension for using a banned substance."
