Early practice exit puts Kevin Smith's status in question for Vikings

"Lions running back Kevin Smith wanted to practice Friday to see whether he could make certain cuts with his sprained right ankle. He couldn't, and now his status for Sunday's game against the Vikings is in question.

Smith left the open portion of practice Friday after pulling up during his first pass route out of the backfield in a skeleton offense drill. He walked immediately off the field and was tended to by trainers.

"I don't know that it was disappointing (to see him limp off)," coach Jim Schwartz said. "It's where he is right now."

Smith is listed as questionable on the official injury report, but Schwartz indicates Smith could be available on a limited basis like he was last week against the Saints. Smith had 80 yards of offense against New Orleans before his ankle gave out early in the third quarter.

"Kevin's a really tough guy, and Kevin can play through and has experience playing through a bunch of injuries," Schwartz said. "But what he gave us last week was significant. And wasn't able to last, but we had a good feeling for that going in.

"We'll just see where gets to on Sunday. I know that if he's available to help us, he will. But we also need to make sure that he's helping the team by being out there.""
