The Red Sox have had a hard time of getting their star players through complete games of late.

Yoenis Cespedes had to be pulled out late of two previous games, but this time it was second baseman Dustin Pedroia’s turn to miss the final innings when the Red Sox could have used him in their 5-3 loss in 10 innings to the Houston Astros last night at Fenway Park.

Pedroia, according to Red Sox manager John Farrell, fouled a pitch off his foot in an early at-bat and stayed in the game. He was in on the eighth inning wildness when he fielded Xander Bogaerts’ flip to second and quickly turned and fired to home to try and get Gregorio Petit for the game-tying run.

Pedroia hit in the bottom of the eighth inning, but was taken out after that and replaced by Kelly Johnson at second. Farrell said that nothing happened further to Pedroia on the throw home.
