Ducks' Selanne undergoes knee surgery

"Teemu Selanne underwent arthroscopic surgery on his left knee in his native Finland on Wednesday, which could delay his decision on whether he'll return to the Ducks for an 18th NHL season.

Selanne's agent, Don Baizley, confirmed to the Register on Thursday that the winger had the procedure done after it was first reported by the website MTV3.fi. Baizley would not offer any specifics on what the surgery was supposed to repair in the knee, which was reconstructed during the 2004-05 lockout.

Ducks GM Bob Murray intimated that the procedure might have been more exploratory in nature but quickly cautioned that "until we know more, we shouldn't speculate."

"I think Teemu wants to play and I think he's trying to make sure that before he decides to play that everything's going to be OK," Murray said. "I think he's taking all the steps to make sure everything is OK. He has every right to do that, by the way."

Selanne will become an unrestricted free agent Friday but the Ducks' all-time leading scorer has mostly worked on one-year contracts and has repeatedly indicated that he'll only play for the Ducks if he decides to put off retirement."
