Ducks' Hiller says he's free of vertigo

"The truest sign of a full recovery from vertigo won't come until his first exhibition game, but Ducks goalie Jonas Hiller has proclaimed himself free of symptoms and set for training camp next month.

Hiller resumed skating July 10 at Francois Allaire's goaltending camp in Hiller's native Switzerland after 21/2 months of rest. The goalie, whose 2010-11 season was wrecked by the symptoms that first surfaced in February, has been facing shots in goal for the past few weeks.

Though the real test of whether he's at full strength won't come until later, Hiller said he's at the point where he would feel comfortable competing in game action.

"I haven't played games for quite a while now so I can't make any promises," he said by telephone. "I'm feeling great in practice. I see the puck well and everything. I'm definitely looking forward to be back playing as soon as possible."

The Ducks sent Hiller home during their first-round playoff series against Nashville and told him to take an extended rest after the plan to work his way through his symptoms failed.

Bob Murray, the Ducks general manager, was pleased with the encouraging news.

"We are very happy for Jonas first and foremost," Murray said. "It's been a long road, but he has worked very hard over the last month, and he's feeling great."

Hiller, 29, kept the Ducks afloat during the early part of last season while a revamped defense was taking shape. He was selected to his first All-Star team, appeared in the league's midseason showcase game and stopped 15 of 17 shots in the one period he played."
