"With NHL commissioner Gary Bettman in attendance, Jonas Hiller stated his case to be named to the All-Star Game when the league fills out the roster Tuesday.
Hiller stopped all 37 shots he faced Sunday against the San Jose Sharks, recording back-to-back shutouts for the first time in his career, and Bobby Ryan's second-period goal stood up in a 1-0 win in front of 16,172 at Honda Center.
Hiller, who also blanked Columbus on Friday, is one win (21) behind Detroit Red Wings goalie Jimmy Howard for the league lead. Hiller now ranks third in save percentage (.929), is tied for second in shutouts (4), and has allowed just five goals in his last five games to lower his goals-against average to 2.39.
"Goaltending is so much about mental toughness and how you feel out there. I'm feeling well," Hiller said. "That's what I've tried to preserve. I know it's not coming for free. I have to work hard for it. Right now I feel like I can go out there and stop pretty much everything that comes at me."
No Anaheim goalie has had back-to-back shutouts since December 2002, when Jean-Sebastien Giguere had three in a row during a memorable season that saw the then-Mighty Ducks reach the Stanley Cup Finals.
Hiller didn't earn any trophies for Sunday's effort, but the Ducks' head-to-head record against San Jose (currently 2-1) and against the Pacific Division (8-4-0) could come into play at the end of the season. "
