In a gritty, no-frills battle against a rival that was outclassing its opposition, the Ducks played it clean and tight against the dominating San Jose Sharks and threatened to put the first blemish on their powerful start.

Pushing the Sharks until the end Tuesday night at HP Pavilion, the Ducks couldn't make a late lead stand up and San Jose escaped with a 3-2 shootout victory to stay with Chicago as the NHL's only two undefeated teams.

Francois Beauchemin and Matt Beleskey scored their first goals of the season in the second period and Jonas Hiller made 16 saves, but it was Logan Couture's goal with 2:45 left in regulation that gave the outplayed Sharks (6-0) new life.
