Before Jose Alvarez made his major-league debut on Sunday, manager Jim Leyland had reasonable expectations for the surprise starter.

Leyland said he hoped Alvarez could go six innings and give the Tigers a chance to win.

Alvarez exceeded expectations, giving up just one run on three hits and stifling the Indians during the Tigers’ 4-1 victory before a sellout crowd of 41,262 Sunday at Comerica Park.

The win gave the Tigers a three-game sweep over Cleveland and was the fourth straight overall.

Alvarez, a 24-year-old left-hander, was a suitable replacement for Anibal Sanchez, who missed the start because of shoulder stiffness. With a cut fastball, curve and changeup, Alvarez kept the Indians off balance, notching seven strikeouts.
