Dombrowski: We won't sign Bonderman, Guerrero not a good fit

"The chance of Jeremy Bonderman remaining a Tiger has dropped from slim to none.

"We are not signing Jeremy Bonderman," Tigers' president and general manager Dave Dombrowski said Tuesday.

Dombrowski said last week that the Tigers would be interested in bringing Bonderman to spring training if he'd agree to a minor-league contract -- but it appears Bonderman about to sign a major-league contract elsewhere.

Dombrowski also put to rest any speculation that the Tigers could be interested in Vladimir Guerrero.

"He's been an outstanding player for a long time, but it's not a fit for us," the Tigers' GM said. "We're not involved in that, and haven't been."To sign Guerrero as a free-agent would have meant handing the designated hitter spot to him on a fulltime basis, switching Victor Martinez to catcher and making a backup catcher out of Alex Avila.

It's been the Tigers' plan all along for Avila to handle most of the catching duties.

As for Bonderman, he moves on at 28 after eight seasons as a Tiger. He topped out at 14 wins (twice) but never put together another such stretch as the 9-1 first half he enjoyed in 2007."
