Dolphins' Wake must prove he's more than pass-rushing specialist

"Jason Taylor credits it to "good cartilage," but the NFL's active sacks leader looks at Cameron Wake with envy sometimes.

The former CFL standout, who serves as Taylor and Joey Porter's pass rushing understudy in his first NFL season with the Miami Dolphins, has an admirable ability to stay low, bend his body in an awkward manner and turn the corner to beat opposing offensive tackles.

"He's an amazing pass rusher," linebacker Channing Crowder said of Wake, who leads the Dolphins with 16 quarterback pressures. "He just comes off the edge with that shoulder dip, the little move he has. There are only about three or four guys in the league who can get as low as he does."

Taylor compares Wake's specialty rush to something he's seen Colts Pro Bowl defensive end Dwight Freeney do regularly.

"As he grows and learns the position overall, I think he can be a total package kind of player," Taylor said.

The key words in that sentence are "grow" and "learns the position," referring to Wake's role as an outside linebacker in the Dolphins' 3-4 defensive scheme.

Heading into Sunday's game against Jacksonville, which has allowed a whopping 34 sacks, every aspect of Wake's game - outside of his rush skills - are viewed as raw. That explains why Wake is only used in certain packages (which call for him to put his hand in the ground) or certain game situations (obvious passing downs).

Although Dolphins coach Tony Sparano admitted earlier this week the team needs to find more opportunities for Wake, who has contributed nine tackles, 4.5 sacks and forced one fumble in his limited opportunities, Sparano is also quick to point out the two-time CFL Defensive Player of the Year hasn't completely shown he's ready for an expanded role."
