"So the Dolphins' first-team offense can move the ball in the rain, after all.
A week after gaining just 19 yards in four series in the rain and slop at Sun Life Stadium, Chad Henne and the starting offense had a much more productive night in a rainy 27-26 exhibition win over the Jacksonville Jaguars on Saturday.
The start of the game was delayed by nearly two hours because of rain and lightning.
The Dolphins first unit gained 160 yards and score scored 17 points in four series with Henne under center, and added another touchdown under Chad Pennington in the 2-minute drill at the end of the first half. In the first half, the Dolphins' starters outscored the Jaguars' starters 24-12.
"We were a little bit more efficient," head coach Tony Sparano said in a statement distributed by the team after halftime, "but we have got a ways to go."
The game certainly didn't start off well for the Dolphins, with Henne almost taking a sack in the end zone before Brandon Fields' punt was blocked out of the end zone for a safety, his second blocked punt in as many games.
But the Dolphins' first-team offense scored on its final four possessions despite the wet conditions, with Dan Carpenter hitting a 23-yard field goal, Henne connecting for two touchdowns with tight end Anthony Fasano and Chad Pennington finishing up the half with a 10-yard touchdown pass to Ronnie Brown.
The Dolphins gained 245 yards in the first half, compared to 120 for Jacksonville, which lost quarterback David Garrard in the second quarter with an injury .
Henne and his receivers were dramatically better than they were in the mud last week against Tampa Bay, when Henne completed just 5 of 11 passes for 19 yards. This time, Henne finished 11-for-14 for 151 yards, two touchdowns and a near-perfect 151.2 passer rating. Henne's stats would have been even better, but two of his three incompletions were dropped by receivers, including another one by Brandon Marshall."
