The Celtics and Clippers were still on speaking terms on a Doc Rivers trade as of last night, but there had been very little in the way of conversation.
According to league sources, as of early evening the teams had spoken just once yesterday, and that discussion didn’t last all that long. Both sides are trying to find an acceptable way to get Rivers and Kevin Garnett to Los Angeles while getting the Celtics enough in return to satisfy what they believe is the market value for the duo.
After talks broke off Saturday and no contact was made Sunday, the teams were able to cross at least one important hurdle yesterday morning. The Celtics apparently came to the conclusion that the Clippers’ unwillingness to include Eric Bledsoe in the trade with DeAndre Jordan for Garnett (Rivers would be dealt for one or more draft picks) was not a bluff. The teams then moved on to other ways they could possibly reach an agreement.

The Celts will reportedly require the Clips to take either Jason Terry or Courtney Lee. The two were brought in to be complementary pieces on a team seeking to make another title run with Garnett and Paul Pierce in its core. With one or both of those veterans likely to be gone from next year’s team and the Celtics at the luxury tax apron, carrying mid-level money veterans on a rebuilding team would be, well, a luxury.
On the other hand, finances have nothing to do with the Rivers portion. According to one source, the Celtics are said to be a tad miffed that some reports make it seem as if they are trying to free itself from the $7 million they are under contract to pay the coach over each of the next three seasons.
“They gave Doc that contract two years ago knowing they were going to be reworking that team before the contract was over,” the source said. “They knew it was more than likely they were going to be paying Doc $7 million to coach a team that wasn’t expected to win much at some point.
“I think it’s pretty fair to assume the only reason the Celtics are in this situation talking to another team about Doc is that Doc was interested in this other job. Once they realized that, they obviously decided to try to make the best of it.”
