Dirk Nowitzki said he has had conversations with a couple of players who have gone through similar surgeries — former Maverick Michael Finley and teammate Shawn Marion.

"Yeah, a lot of the guys have had it done," he said. "I talked to Marion a little bit. He had it actually really early in his career at Phoenix and he was out five or six [weeks]. It just depends on how the healing is going and how the swelling goes down and the strength comes back."

Nowitzki said one of the disappointing aspects is how hard he worked on his leg strength this summer.

That work will have to be repeated when his knee strengthens.
