"The Yankees were so concerned about Russell Martin's bruised left big toe that they sent the catcher for a MRI exam Tuesday. Luckily, it didn't reveal structural damage.
Martin, who didn't play Sunday or Monday, was in the lineup yesterday for the second-straight game and a day deal after a night game.
Martin went 0-for-3 in the 4-2 Yankees win and is hitless in seven at-bats since sitting out two games. He is also in a 0-for-16 slide.
"You would think it would be better. Play [yesterday] and get [today] off and it should be better after that," manager Joe Girardi said. "He has a sore toe, there is no doubt about it."
Trainer Gene Monahan added padding to Martin's shoe that already features a protective cover.
"He has a hard protective cover over his shoe so he takes another foul tip it's protected," Girardi said.
Three weeks ago Martin got hit on the toe by a batted ball during batting practice and blood pooled under the nail that had to be drained. In the third inning Saturday in Seattle, Martin fouled a pitch off the same toe."
