Devils to buy out Colin White after 11 seasons with the team

"After 11 seasons with the Devils, Colin White will be playing for someone else when the 2011-12 season begins. The veteran defenseman cleared waivers and will be bought out, Devils GM Lou Lamoriello said.

"Nothing is official yet, but it will happen," Lamoriello said yesterday of a buyout of White and newly acquired forward Trent Hunter, who were placed on waivers Monday.

The buyouts are expected to be completed today, and will make both players unrestricted free agents.

White's agent, Ben Hankinson, said the rugged, 6-4, 210-pound defenseman shouldn't have a problem finding work.

"I think there's quite a few teams that are interested in his services," Hankinson said. "We're just sorting through our options right now. Colin White will be playing somewhere in the NHL this season."

The buyouts will open salary cap room as well as free up space on the roster for some of the Devils' younger players, including the team's 2011 first-round pick, defenseman Adam Larsson. Buying out White, who was owed $3 million this season, will cost the Devils $2 million against the cap over the next two years, or $1 million this year and next. Buying out Hunter (owed $4 million over two years) will cost them $2.67 million against the cap over four years, meaning $666,667 per year."
