After scoring 10 goals in his first 14 games this season, David Clarkson has now gone eight games without one.

That’s unusual for the right winger, who had six goals in 10 career games at Air Canada Centre before being held scoreless Monday night.

“I don’t know what it is,” Clarkson said. “I don’t consider myself a scorer who’s going to scoer every night. I’m getting the chances but not finding the back of the net. I have to find a way to keep putting it on net and hopefully it goes in soon.”

• Marek Zidlicky, who scored both Devils goals, fell short of becoming only the second Devils defenseman to register a hat trick. The only New Jersey defenseman to do so was Uli Hiemer, who scored three goals on Oct. 31, 1984, against the Penguins.

“It’s pretty tough when you score two goals and it doesn’t help you win,” Zidlicky said. “The priority right now is we need to win some games. We have to get back our confidence.”

• Goalie Johan Hedberg said Nazem Kadri’s goal at 10:34 of the first period, which gave Toronto a 1-0 lead, should have been stopped.

“It hit the heel of my stick and I put it in my own five-hole,” Hedberg explained. “When things aren’t going the way they should go, funny things happen. That shouldn’t happen.
That’s just a bad goal.”
