"As expected, defenseman Colin White's 10-season Devils career officially came to an end Tuesday when the team bought out the remaining season on his contract.
White, a member of the Devils' 2000 and '03 Stanley Cup teams, and right wing Trent Hunter cleared waivers at noon Tuesday without being claimed, which was a precursor to the team being able to buy them out. After being bought out, White and Hunter, who was acquired in last Thursday's trade with the Islanders, became unrestricted free agents.
The Devils saved $3,333,333 in cap space by buying out White and Hunter, leaving them roughly $5.8 million under the NHL's $64.3 million cap for the 2011-12 season."
