The Devils activated defenseman Anton Volchenkov from the injured reserve list. He will be in the lineup Friday night against the Carolina Hurricanes.

“He’s a guy that is tough to play against. He wins a lot of battles, so that should definitely help,” coach Pete DeBoer said. “It’s like anything, you move out physical presence and move in puck-movers. You’re a little better in one area and a little poorer in another.

“For me, for how we want to play and our identity, we miss those big physical guys.”

Damien Brunner will also play. Brunner sat out the last game and hasn’t scored in his last 12 games.

“Brunner sat down for a night. I think he’s excited to get back in,” DeBoer said. “We knew going in with seven games in 11 nights that we were going to have to rotate some fresh bodies in and out, try and get some fresh legs in and re-energize the group. That was the plan going in. Players’ play during the stretch determines who is in and who is out. But he gets to get back in tonight and show us what he can do and we’re excited to see him.”
