Justin Verlander has been dominate down the stretch for the Detroit Tigers.

Particularly in September.

For the second straight season and first time this year, Verlander was named AL Pitcher of the Month, Major League Baseball announced Tuesday.

The award went to Verlander three days after the AL Cy Young Award candidate threw seven impressive innings en route to his fifth win in September. He finished the month with a 5-1 record en route to a 1.93 ERA in six starts.

Verlander was tops in the AL in wins and his 41 strikeouts tied him for first in the AL this past month. The 42 innings he worked were the second-most pitched, too.

It was the third time he's won the AL honor, being named Pitcher of the Month in 2009, too, and it marked the second time in as many seasons a Tigers pitcher has won the honor. Doug Fister received the league's top pitching honor last September.
