Leading up to the 2013 NFL draft, MLive.com writers Anwar Richardson and Justin Rogers will preview prospects who could be a fit for the Detroit Lions.

Name: Tyrann Mathieu
Position: Cornerback
School: LSU
Height: 5-foot-9
Weight: 186 pounds
Projected round: 3rd-4th
40-yard dash time: 4.50 seconds

Key stats: In 2011, Mathieu took the college football world by storm, racking up 76 tackles, intercepting two passes and breaking up 11 more. He biggest impact may have been in the return game, where he averaged 17.2 yards on 25 punt returns, bringing two back for touchdowns. He was named a first-team All-American and finished fifth in the Heisman voting that year.

Notable: One of the most controversial players in the draft, Mathieu didn't play in 2012 after being dismissed by LSU for multiple violations of team rules. He's been brutally honest with NFL teams about his past drug issues and has worked hard to rehab his image, entering a substance abuse program last year. It was recently reported the test he took at the combine came back clean.

Quotable: "Obviously, teams will have to do their homework regarding Mathieu's off-the-field issues, but past play on the field has created some buzz. He lacks ideal size, but his combination of quickness, toughness and instincts has teams excited about his potential at the nickel position. He also has added value as a returner, where his electric change-of-direction skills are on display." -- Daniel Jeremiah, NFL.com
