Derrick Williams in unique position in NBA Draft

"If the Cavaliers ultimately pass on Derrick Williams as the top pick in Thursday's NBA Draft, it might have more to do with position than anything else.

Despite Williams' insistence that he is a small forward who can play a little power forward, the Cavs see him as the exact opposite. Even after a private workout last week when Williams dazzled the Cavs with his athleticism, one league source with knowledge of their draft plans said they still view him first as a power forward.

They're obviously still interested, however. The Cavs snuck Williams back into town Monday on what was a big day at Cleveland Clinic Courts. In addition to the surprise trip by Williams, they also brought back center Enes Kanter for a second workout and point guard Brandon Knight for his first.

If the Cavs are simply throwing out smokescreens, they've certainly done a nice job of clouding the air around the rest of the draft.

If they truly felt Williams had the ability to defend opposing small forwards like LeBron James, Carmelo Anthony and Kevin Durant, it might be an easy call to select him with the No. 1 pick, since their collection of wing players was arguably the worst in the league last season.

Viewing Williams as a power forward creates a logjam with J.J. Hickson, who is entering the final year of his rookie contract and coming off his best season. And at 6-foot-8, Williams is slightly undersized to play the post full time.

The Cavs are still toying with the idea of how to move up to No. 2 and select both Irving and Williams. Short of that, they will have to choose between the two.

''Derrick Williams will be a terrific scorer in the NBA,'' ESPN college basketball analyst Jay Bilas said in a conference call. ''But all things considered, I

think Irving is the pick there.''

Williams did his best during the season to state his case. He averaged 19.5 points and 8.3 rebounds as a sophomore at Arizona and shot 57 percent on 3-pointers. At the NBA combine last month, he repeatedly referenced that 3-point shooting percentage as why he views himself as a small forward.

''I'm quicker than most people,'' Williams said. ''I'm not saying I'm quicker than LeBron, but my speed and quickness hopefully translates to the NBA. I'm stronger than most people think.''"
