"Derek Jeter is tops in New York - and so are the Yankees.

The Bronx Bombers shortstop ranks as the most beloved pro athlete in the state and the Yankees are the most popular team, according to a Siena Research Institute poll released Thursday.

"While not every New Yorker is wearing a Yankee cap or t-shirt, there's no question about the Empire State's top team," said Siena Director Don Levy.

Jeter, the Yankees' all-time hit leader, was ranked as the favorite athlete by 25% of state voters, according to Siena."
