Yankees captain Derek Jeter called the mother of Victoria Soto, a 27-year-old first grade teacher who was slain Friday in the Newtown, Conn. school shooting as she tried to protect her students from the gun-wielding killer.

According to ESPN.com, Jeter telephoned Donna Soto, Victoria's mother, on Wednesday - the same day Victoria Soto was buried.

Carlee Soto, Victoria's sister, tweeted the news of Jeter's phone call.

"Derek Jeter just called my mom!!!!! Thanks Vicki, she needs it thank you @yankees this meant a lot to my mother and all of us," the tweet read.

Victoria Soto was a big Yankees fan. She was one of 26 people -- six adults and 20 children -- who were killed at the school by 20-year-old Adam Lanza. Lanza also killed his mother and himself.
