For once, Wes Welker wanted to slow down.

The diminutive, darting slot receiver who had played the previous six seasons with New England had the Broncos' two-year, $12 million offer directly from John Elway.

Welker, though, went into a Wednesday late-morning stall, saying he wanted to talk it over with his wife, and Anna was still on an airplane.

"I don't know that she was, but I know he wanted some time to think," Elway said.

No other NFL team stirred free-agent buzz through the first two days of free agency last week more than the Broncos. And that was before the Broncos blew up the Twitter world Friday with the Dumervil docudrama.

No doubt, the untimely — in every sense of the word — release of Elvis Dumervil in the minutes before the 2 p.m. Friday deadline marred what had been an exceptional free-agent period for the Broncos.
