"The Royals will go with a 13-man pitching staff, one more than normal, for a while longer - only now the extra man will be in the bullpen and not the rotation.
Left-handed reliever Everett Teaford will be recalled from Class AAA Omaha before tonight's series opener against the Baltimore Orioles. He replaces right-handed starter Kyle Davies, who was placed on the disabled list Monday because of a shoulder injury.
Teaford, 27, was 0-0 with one save and a 2.25 ERA in 16 innings over 17 appearances in two previous tours this season with the big-league club. He was also 3-2 with a 3.34 ERA in 16 games for the Storm Chasers.
Davies, 27, was diagnosed with an impingement in his right shoulder in an examination Monday after the ailment forced him to skip Sunday's scheduled start against the Indians in Cleveland.
"It was bothering me before the (July 25) game in Boston," Davies said, "and it hasn't gotten better. It's a nag. It was every throw warming up. I made it through Boston, and I really didn't feel it during the game, but I couldn't extend myself too much."
Davies said the problem was similar to an earlier injury, inflammation in his rotator cuff, which forced him to leave a May 16 start against the Indians in the first inning at Kauffman Stadium. He did not return to active duty until July 2."
