"Quarterback David Garrard underwent successful surgery at Baptist Orthopedic Surgery Center in Jacksonville.
The surgery repaired a tendon disruption and ligament rupture in Garrard's right middle finger. As Garrard put it, the ligament was torn from the bone.
The Jaguars put Garrard on injured reserve. Garrard injured the finger on his throwing hand against the Indianapolis Colts two weeks ago by hitting it on Colts defensive end Dwight Freeney's helmet. He played the next week against the Washington Redskins, and the finger got worse.
Garrard posted a photo of himself on Twitter in which he is wearing his arm in a sling and a cast around his hand. He added the message, "Surgery went great. Now for the recovery!"
Recovery time is expected to be about two months.
Jaguars offensive coordinator Dirk Koetter came to Garrard's defense Thursday and also offered some more information about Maurice Jones-Drew's knee injury.
Koetter called himself a Garrard fan.
"I know that Dave gives his all for the Jaguars," Koetter said. "Dave is not about himself. He's about the Jaguars winning games. I know that for a fact because I'm around him every day. If I could wave a magic wand and change some things about him, would I? Sure, but he'd probably say the same thing about me."
Koetter addressed complaints about Garrard and theories that the Jaguars should try other options at the position."
