"Jaguars quarterback David Garrard injured his back, then left the practice fields through a back exit during Thursday night's training camp practice.
Despite wearing a red no-contact jersey, as all the Jaguars quarterbacks do, Garrard was knocked down at least once during an 11-on-11 drill late in practice. Garrard received attention from Jaguars trainer Mike Ryan on the sideline before leaving the field.
"David's back got a little tight, so we're just icing him down," Del Rio said. "He'll get treatment and all that. But he should be fine, so nothing major there. He came to me after the first team period, then to Mike Ryan, and said it was getting tight. It's not the time to push through that kind of thing, so just let it settle down."
Del Rio indicated he did not think Garrard would need X-rays, but said that decision was up to Ryan, the team's head trainer. Del Rio also said he would be surprised if Garrard didn't play in Saturday night's scrimmage.
Garrard has been a durable quarterback for the Jaguars, but missed the season finale last year after tearing ligaments and tendons in the middle finger on his throwing hand. Garrard had surgery on the finger during the last week of the season.
The 10-year veteran was limited in a few practices early in the season with back tightness, but didn't miss playing time.
Rookie quarterback Blaine Gabbert took over first-team snaps after Garrard's departure. The Jaguars drafted Gabbert 10th overall in this year's draft. He was not expected to compete for a starting job."
