Daunte Culpepper might come back

"Detroit Lions general manager Martin Mayhew met with a group of reporters today to review the 2009 season. Here are the highlights:

• Running back Kevin Smith will have shoulder surgery when he gets off crutches from his surgery to repair a torn ACL. Mayhew said the shoulder injury Smith suffered Sept. 27 against Washington would have put some players on injured reserve. He said the shoulder came out and needs to be tightened.

• Mayhew wouldn't rule out bringing back veteran quarterback Daunte Culpepper, whose contract is up. He said Drew Stanton will be back. He said Stanton is still developing, and the Lions still believe in him.

• Mayhew said the Lions' 2-14 record was obviously unacceptable and no one should feel comfortable with the job they did.

• Mayhew declined to comment on whether there will be changes to the coaching staff, but he said he couldn't be happier with the offensive and defensive staffs.

• The Lions are expected to coach the Senior Bowl this month in Mobile, Ala., though that has not been officially announced. That will allow the coaches to get a closer look at some prospects for the draft. "
