The former England striker, who has racked up nearly £50m in transfer fees during his career, has been on loan from Aston Villa all season.

However, he has managed just 10 league starts all campaign and on Sunday suffered the ignominy of seeing 17-year-old Moussa Dembele start up front and then, as Fulham pushed for late goals, fellow teenagers Cauley Woodrow and Paddy Roberts were called off the bench ahead of Bent.

Magath afterwards claimed it was a fitness issue, but having shrugged off the knock he picked up in training on Thursday, Bent insisted he was fully fit.

"I was fine to play," he said. "I trained on Saturday. I took a knock on the Thursday and missed out on a large portion of training. The day of the game, I felt fine to be honest.

"It is especially disappointing to be stuck on the bench in games like Sunday's, where you feel that you can affect the game - when your team needs a goal. Obviously, over the years I have managed to produce quite a few of those.
