The Detroit Tigers placed lefty reliever Darin Downs on waivers and the Houston Astros picked him up.

This is hardly newsworthy, we know. But how Downs found out is more than interesting.

Downs, 28, a native of Southfield, told the Houston Chronicle that he learned of the transaction while taking his wife to the hospital to give birth to the couple’s second child.

“Loading the car, trying to get in the car and all of a sudden I was looking at my phone,” Downs said. “I had a couple missed calls, a couple text messages. So I call one of the front office staff from the Tigers, he says, ‘Oh, you’ve just been claimed by the Astros.’ I’m like, ‘All right, cool. I’m going to the hospital.’ ”

In two seasons with Detroit, Downs has a career ERA of 4.34 in 56 innings. Last season, he struck out 57 batters and walked 20 over 35 1⁄3 innings, but the ERA got up to 4.84.
