Even for reporters, the clues were obvious.
One goalie, Joey MacDonald, was breaking in brand-new pads. These pillows, fresh out of the cellophane, were glowing white. (His new mask, by the way, is in the mail.)
Another goalie, Miikka Kiprusoff, was actually smiling and joking around. Not a care in the world.
Meanwhile, the third goalie on the ice Sunday morning, Danny Taylor, was working the net at the home end of the rink — typically, a tell-tale giveaway.
In other words, by the time Calgary Flames coach Bob Hartley announced that Taylor would be starting Sunday night against the visiting Vancouver Canucks, it was no surprise.
"He had two great periods (in a 4-0 loss Feb. 18) in Phoenix," Hartley said. "Joey MacDonald played quite a few games for us. Kipper is getting healthier, is getting closer. So we felt, at the same time as giving a break to Joey MacDonald, having another look at Danny Taylor would be a good idea.
"He has worked very hard with us. He’s an awesome pro. A good young man. I know he’s going to give us a big game."
