"According to coach Wade Phillips, Romo threw well enough to show the Cowboys that he is recovering. The Cowboys are more pessimistic about Witten, whom Phillips described as a "game-time decision."
Said Phillips: "I won't say it's severe, but it's something that worries us about him being able to play."
If Witten cannot play, Martellus Bennett and rookie John Phillips would have increased responsibilities. Bennett, plagued by drops early in the season, matched his season high with three catches for 43 yards against Washington.
"Martellus showed up in the last game," Phillips said.
Witten plays a major role in the passing game. Romo has thrown more passes to Witten (71) than to any other receiver and uses him as a third-down security blanket. Witten has caught 13 of 15 passes on third down for 122 yards and nine first downs.
Williams takes high road: Wide receiver Roy Williams took the high road and refused to engage in a war of words with Washington safety LaRon Landry.
On Monday, Landry told Washington-area reporters that Williams played "scared" and changed his patterns to avoid contact. Williams did not have a reception for only the third time in 79 career NFL games.
"God bless the individual," Williams said. "He's coming off a tough loss to the Dallas Cowboys, so I guess that's what he had to say."
Williams, who missed one game this season because of fractured ribs, denied that he changed his routes in the interest of self-preservation.
"I'm running across the middle, stretching out, trying my best to catch the football," Williams said. "If that's scared, let me know.""
