"Bears quarterback Jay Cutler will undergo surgery Tuesday for a broken right thumb and the team remains hopeful he will be able to return this season.

"Jay does have a right thumb fracture," coach Lovie Smith said during an appearance on WBBM-AM 780. "He hurt it on the tackle on the interception. Of course, we took X-rays last night and he'll be seeing specialists this morning and we'll be able to tell you a little more after that."

Smith has a news conference at Halas Hall scheduled for noon. He was unaware of Cutler's injury during his postgame news conference at Soldier Field after the Bears' 31-20 victory over the San Diego Chargers on Sunday."
