A name that has surfaced as a potential replacement for Mickey Callaway with the Cleveland Indians is former Boston Red Sox and Oakland Athletics pitching coach Curt Young.

“Don’t be surprised if Young is reunited with Francona,” one source texted. “Very much a possibility.”

The Young-Francona connection is a real one — he was with Francona in Boston as pitching coach. Before coming to Boston, Young spent time in Oakland with the Athletics, leading them to become one of the best pitching staffs in the league — at least statistically.

“We both came up with Curt as a No. 1 choice for the Boston Red Sox for a lot of different factors,” Francona said in 2010 after the team hired Young.

Now that Young is free again after being let go by Oakland, people in the game are connecting him to the Indians, who now have an opening since Callaway left to become the next manager of the New York Mets.
