"Daunte Culpepper is a Lion again. But this time, he'll quarterback the Sacramento Mountain Lions of the United Football League.
Culpepper's UFL signing was made official by the league Monday, as the three-time Pro Bowler is reunited with his former Minnesota Vikings head coach, Dennis Green, who'll coach the Sacramento team this fall.
Culpepper, signed as a semi-retired free agent by Detroit in November 2008, was winless in 10 starts in the NFL the last two seasons. Prior to that, he had brief stints with Oakland and Miami, but his career has never been the same since suffering a serious knee injury in 2005, his last season with the Vikings.
And with little interest as a free agent again this spring, the 33-year-old Culpepper opted for the UFL, which enters its second season as a de facto minor-league outlet for the NFL. More than two dozen players joined NFL teams after the UFL season ended last November.
"My goal for this year was to get on the field and play football," Culpepper said in the UFL release. "When the opportunity came for me to sign with the UFL and play for Coach Green in Sacramento I could not resist. I am impressed with his approach to the game and to his players.""
