"Carlos Pena's "pillow contract" has been anything but comfortable for the Cubs' new first baseman since arriving in Chicago.
Pena has struggled to get in a groove in his first month, and turning a page on the calendar Sunday was a chance to put April in the rearview mirror.
But just when it looked like Pena's home-run drought had finally ended, reality bit the Cubs in the backside again.
Right-fielder Justin Upton caught Pena's would-be two-run home run at the top of the wall in the ninth inning Sunday, and the Diamondbacks wound up with a 4-3 win for a split in the four-game series.
"Hand grenades, cigars … whatever the heck that (saying) is," manager Mike Quade said.
Quade meant close only counts with horseshoes and hand grenades. But the Cubs never have been in possession of a lucky horseshoe as Pena, mired in a 3-for-31 slump, has become painfully aware in the early going.
"When it left the bat, I thought it had a chance," he said. "It wasn't my best ball, but I knew I had enough of it to go over the fence. Unfortunately, it just died at the end."
The Cubs' chances didn't die on that out. Marlon Byrd, who doubled off J.J. Putz leading off the ninth, advanced to third on Pena's long fly. But after a walk to Geovany Soto, pinch-hitter Jeff Baker grounded into a game-ending double play on the first pitch, sealing the deal."
