Cubs general manager Jed Hoyer said management had nothing to do with the way manager Dale Sveum handled Starlin Castro's latest mental gaffe.

"That was something we talked about (with Sveum) during the (managerial) interview process," Hoyer said. "(Castro) already had had that 'Bobby Valentine' moment where he missed a pitch (last August), so that came up in the interview. We were hoping we'd never have another incident, but we did.

"That's why we hire a manager. It's the manager's job to (handle) that, and if the players feel like we're managing that, it totally undercuts Dale. So Dale did that on his own, and it was a perfect tone."
