Julio Borbon, the Rangers' Opening Day center fielder in 2010 and 2011, was claimed on waivers Friday by the Chicago Cubs, according to two sources.

The Rangers had placed Borbon on waivers Wednesday after being unable to work out a trade with another team. He had been designated for assignment April 10 to clear a roster spot for Nick Tepesch.

Borbon was selected by the Rangers in the 2007 draft, and made his major-league debut in 2009. A hamstring injury in 2011 put him on the disabled list, and he was optioned to Triple A Round Rock once healthy. He did not play in the major leagues in 2012, but opened this season on the Rangers' roster.
