Coyotes newcomer Wolski already paying dividends

"Reality imitated fantasy for Wojtek Wolski in his Coyotes' debut.

One of Wolski's favorite video games is "Call of Duty." And when first called to duty by the Coyotes, he scored the winning goal with 23 seconds remaining against a team that traded him away the day before.

"The biggest thing is relaxing and watching movies on my time off, and I play a lot of video games," he said.

For Wolski, his script in his first Coyotes' game was one that likely made his buddy, movie director Jason Reitman, smile. Reitman was nominated for two Academy Awards for "Up in the Air."

That was the only nominated movie Wolski has seen, and he had plans Sunday night to watch some of the show to see if Reitman wins an Oscar. Wolski was born in Poland and moved with family to Germany when he was 4 years old. They then settled in Toronto, where he "had the pleasure of playing hockey there."

He is bilingual, English and Polish, and at one time spoke French.

When he lived in Colorado before his recent trade for Peter Mueller and Kevin Porter, he joked, "I was lucky in the fact that I rented this season; it really kind of seemed to work out."

Wolski a 'hybrid'

Wolski downplayed his own heroics after his first game, giving credit to Shane Doan for setting him up - and General Manager Don Maloney envisions the favor being returned many times over.

"I think he's a hybrid," he said. "I think he can score, has tremendous offensive instincts but not that pure 40-goal scorer.

"I see him more of a playmaker than a scorer, maybe ultimately a centerman rather than a wing, but in our situation where we're lined up, we need him to play wing for us."

Depending on how the season plays out, that goal could be large. It stopped a season-high three-game losing streak, and the Coyotes continue to battle for their first playoff spot since 2002. He followed that up with a goal and an assist in a 4-0 victory over the Anaheim Ducks on Saturday. "
