"Roy Williams couldn't look. When David Buehler lined up for a 59-yard field goal with 31 seconds left, Williams was on the Dallas Cowboys sideline with his head down.
"I thought it was good at first from what I was hearing," Williams said, "but then all of a sudden, I heard silence."
That told Williams there would be no overtime, that he would leave the field as one of the biggest goats in franchise history. Buehler's kick was plenty long, but it barely missed wide left with 25 seconds remaining.
Aided by Williams' shocking fumble with 3:03 left, the New Orleans Saints ? bounced back from blowing a 17-point lead to eke out a 30-27 win before 90,985 on Thursday.
"I lost the ballgame. I will say that," a dejected Williams said. "I let my teammates down."
In their Thanksgiving Day debut, the Saints (8-3) led 17-0 entering the second quarter and 20-3 just before halftime."
