The Dallas Cowboys officially exercised their fifth-year player option on LT Tyron Smith on Thursday, CBSSports.com's Jason La Canfora reported, citing league sources.

As had been suspected, the Cowboys chose to pick up the option on Smith, who's become one of the best offensive linemen in the NFL over his first three seasons. Smith made his first Pro Bowl last season, and the Cowboys, inevitably, are hoping for many more.

Smith was taken with the ninth pick in the 2011 draft and was guaranteed a player option as a first-rounder – a new provision in the CBA.
