Cowboys backup picture hazy

"Jon Kitna has quietly slipped into retirement, Stephen McGee is fresh off bagging a big buck in South Texas and the Dallas Cowboys are preparing to search for a veteran backup quarterback.

Lincoln High School in Tacoma, Wash., introduced Kitna as its football coach Thursday after he pulled the curtain on a 15-season NFL career, including the last three with the Cowboys.

Kitna will also teach math at his alma mater, putting to use the math education degree he received from Central Washington.

While Kitna was settling into his post-football career, Jerry Jones, Jason Garrett and the Cowboys' scouts were at the Senior Bowl studying draft prospects.

Meeting with reporters in Mobile, Ala., this week, Jones was asked about the backup quarterback spot. His response indicated the club will seek to land a veteran to replace Kitna. If that's the case, it means another season at the bottom of the depth chart for McGee, a Texas A&M product who just completed his third season with Dallas."
