"Whether wide receiver Donte' Stallworth joins the Detroit Lions depends on how he looks after a yearlong suspension, what kind of contract he wants and the level of interest among other teams.
Stallworth reportedly was to work out for the Lions today. But team spokesman Bill Keenist said he could not confirm a visit, and Stallworth's agent, Drew Rosenhaus, did not respond to messages. Free agents visiting the Lions often arrive in the evening.
The Lions need help at wide receiver to complement Calvin Johnson. But Stallworth, 29, hasn't played since 2008, when he caught 17 passes for 170 yards and one touchdown for the Browns. His best season was in '05, when he caught 70 passes for 945 yards and seven touchdowns for New Orleans.
Stallworth struck and killed a pedestrian while driving drunk in March in Miami Beach, Fla. He pleaded guilty to DUI manslaughter, served fewer than 30 days in jail and was suspended by the NFL.
Commissioner Roger Goodell said he met with Stallworth for about an hour six weeks ago.
"I wanted to see how he was doing, what he had been focused on during his time away from the game, and I think he's in a better place than he was," Goodell said during his Super Bowl XLIV news conference Friday. "I think he recognizes what he did and the horrific nature and the unfortunate outcome, and I think he's prepared himself to get back in and play."
Goodell reinstated Stallworth on Monday, and the Browns released him. Rosenhaus told the Boston Globe that Stallworth is willing to play for any NFL team and should sign within the next couple of weeks."
