"Does Buster Posey's presence make it less urgent for the Giants to add another bat before Saturday's trade deadline?
Posey certainly extends the lineup, and several other players have followed his lead to help the Giants win 15 of 18 entering Monday's game.
"I think we have a very talented club. If we play up to what we're capable of doing, we'll be fine," manager Bruce Bochy said. "But if anything is going to improve the club, you do it if it makes sense."
Management continues to consider a trade for a hitter and/or a left-handed reliever. With the Marlins in town, general manager Brian Sabean can get a look Jorge Cantu, who is trade bait and a free agent-to-be. The Giants aren't impressed with Cantu's numbers, especially lately. Coming into Monday's game, he was hitting .260 with 10 homers and 54 RBIs - but .212 with one homer and eight RBIs since June 15.
Plus, he's a sub-par defensive third baseman. The Rangers and Rockies have interest in him as a first baseman. Asked about the Giants on Monday, Cantu smiled and said, "We'll see. I'll try to make a good impression out there.""
