Matthew Pouliot over at Hardball Talk took Wednesday's NLCS rain delay as an opportunity to run down a list of hitters who could represent Team USA in next spring's World Baseball Classic, with Paul Konerko among the names at first base.

Prince Fielder undoubtedly is the best of the group, which also includes Mark Teixeira, Ryan Howard and Adam LaRoche. By OPS, the ranking would go Fielder (.940), Konerko (.857), LaRoche (.853), Teixeira (.807) and Howard (.718).

Whether Konerko would accept a nomination is another question -- he turns 36 on March 5 and underwent wrist surgery earlier this month. But there's little doubt he belongs in the conversation to be Fielder's backup.

Chris Sale could also warrant consideration for spot in Team USA's rotation, although he's another one who could decline the invite as he enters only his second year as a starter. Justin Verlander, Clayton Kershaw, David Price, Gio Gonzalez, Zack Greinke, Cliff Lee and C.C. Sabathia headline a loaded crop of starters from which Team USA could choose.
