Devils goalie Cory Schneider would have liked to finish his preseason without allowing a goal.

He came within 91 seconds.

“I think we were all hoping we could keep the streak alive for him” coach Pete DeBoer said “but we’ll just have to start another one.”

After a hooking penalty from Damien Brunner Flyers defenseman Timmo Kimonen scored on the power play. That ended Schneider’s shutout streak at 158 minutes 29 seconds.

“We were kind of joking that maybe it’s good to get it out of the way so you don’t have to carry it into the season and think about it” Schneider said. “It doesn’t really count. Come the start of the year no one is going to care what happened. They’re going to care going forward.”

He had posted seven straight scoreless periods until Timonen’s shot.

“Good thing it didn’t hit me. It would’ve hurt” the goalie said. “I think it was the crossbar. I never really saw it. Pretty good shot by a pretty good player.”

DeBoer who will play Martin Brodeur in the preseason finale praised Schneider.

“What do you say? Just solid confident. He gives our team that feeling when he gets in there” DeBoer said.

Schneider said he feels ready for the regular season.

“Yeah. We have over a week until the season starts. That’s a pretty long layoff. But I feel pretty good about things” he said. “I can fine tune rather than not feeling good and trying to catch up this week.”
