Cooper: White Sox fans should lay off Dunn

"White Sox pitching coach Don Cooper has had enough of fans booing struggling slugger Adam Dunn.

Cooper called out Sox fans for their treatment of Dunn, who has been a first-half free-agent flop on the South Side. Dunn hasn't lived up to the four-year, $56 million deal he signed in the offseason, batting just .160 with only nine home runs and has struck out a league-high 117 times.

And the boos Dunn hears at U.S. Cellular after every strikeout or popup certainly aren't helping, Cooper said.

"You know what, if you are all fans, why don't you pull for him?" Cooper said on an appearance on WSCR-AM 670's "Mully and Hanley" show Thursday morning. "That will help him come out of it. It makes his job hitting, which is very tough to do regardless--hitting a baseball is the toughest thing to do in any sport, OK? -- it's hard enough to do that, but when you are getting booed by 40,000 people -- and they have their right, they can do that ... it's hard enough to perform at the major league level doing any job, especially hitting, and to get booed every time you do something bad, my gosh, that's gotta be hard."

Asked if fans were transferring their displeasure for general manager Ken Williams or manager Ozzie Guillen, Cooper didn't buy it.

"You think they are booing Kenny Williams? Certainly Kenny brought him here and he's not doing the job, but they're not booing Kenny," Cooper said. "And they're not booing Ozzie. They are booing the guy failing at that moment, that's what's happening. And it makes it very difficult on top of everything."
