Connolly, Grier lead Sabres to victory over Blues

" Sometimes a line just has "it." The three forwards seem to have an innate sense of togetherness, a knowledge of what each other wants to do.

Tim Kennedy, Mike Grier and Thomas Vanek make up that trio right now for the Buffalo Sabres. Their it factor propelled the team to a comeback victory Sunday.

Kennedy set up Grier for the second time early in the final period to tie St. Louis, and Tim Connolly followed with two special-teams goals to give the Sabres a 5-3 victory over the Blues.

The Kennedy line combined for six points. Grier had two goals and an assist, Kennedy had two helpers and Vanek added an assist.

"We've played well, got some bounces," Grier said in Scottrade Center. "We play the same kind of hockey. We all want to play north-south, get the puck in, hang on to pucks and get things to the net.

"We're just trying to work, create some opportunities, and today I thought we did that."

The trio had success earlier in the season but was broken up by injuries and absences. Vanek returned to the lineup and the line Saturday, and he scored off an assist by Grier during the 3-2 shootout loss to Ottawa.

"Sometimes you just have a natural thing with some guys, and I think we have that," Kennedy said. "We just know where everyone is going to be.

"You can feel it, but I'm playing with two guys that are not very hard to play with at all. Michael, he's always talking to me and always in position. Thomas is always in the slot, always looking for the puck, so my job's not too hard."

His talent is making it easier. The Sabres took a 2-1 lead midway through the second after two perfect passes. Chris Butler, back after a 12-game injury absence, hit Kennedy at the far blue line from the Sabres' zone. Kennedy peeled toward the boards to wait for Grier, then connected with the streaking winger for a redirect.

Kennedy set up Grier for another deflection to make it 3-3 with 3:15 gone in the third.

"If you look at the plays Tim Kennedy made, it was absolutely fabulous," Sabres coach Lindy Ruff said. "He was right in the thick of the offensive side of it. Michael, again, was on the receiving end of a couple great passes. I don't think you can say enough about the way Michael played, penalty killing-wise and five-on-five.""
