Cody Latimer was all ready to play his first-ever round of golf this week alongside a fellow member of the Denver Broncos' rookie class – something that would be a fun, no-pressure environment for a guy who had never even swung a golf club.

Peyton Manning had other plans.

"They told me I was already taken, that No. 18 had asked for me," Latimer said.

Indeed, Manning got to choose his foursome for the team's annual golf outing earlier this week, and the quarterback picked three of the newest teammates – Latimer, free agent wide receiver Emmanuel Sanders, and third-round pick offensive tackle Michael Schofield.

"It was just an honor that he wanted to get to know me," Latimer told USA TODAY Sports on Friday evening at the NFL Players Association Rookie Premiere in Los Angeles. "And then he also taught me how to play golf. He didn't know till we got there that I had never golfed."

So what sort of impression did Latimer make on the links?

"We did good. We shot two under," he said.

It was a scramble format, and Latimer was proud to say he excelled with his driver – enough so that the group played off his tee shot several times. Now Latimer is hooked, and he plans on buying his first set of clubs soon.
